Artic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
- Air musicians! Get ready for a bad ass album that will have your invisible calluses pulsing. The Arctic Monkeys’ NO.1 debut album 'WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT’S WHAT IM NOT’ will have you rockin’ out, and throwing your dancing shoes on within the first track. The album is definitely the driving force behind the live performance. Rev Jon Rarsclart recollects that the show was “an adventure…Like getting on a bus to the other end of town and your [sp] not really sure where it goes but you get on anyway.” Signed onto the same Domino label as Franz Ferdinand, the Arctic Monkeys have a Sublime/Red Hot Chili Peppers/The Clash sound going for them, and have mentioned that their influences include: The Smiths
John Cooper Clarke, and The Jam.
Lead singer Alex/Al Turner can string together those endless lyrics typical of British punk/rock, but also has a scream that will have you tossing your head backward so that your rock-star hair flies in the air. Guitarist Jamie Cook knows how to blaze down the frets pulling off some sick riffs. Drummer Matt Helders spits fire with his sticks rocking heart thumping bass beats with drum rolls that sound like semi-automatic machine gun fire. Bassist Andy Nicholson jams out smooth and deep bass lines that hold it all together.
Tracks like “I Bet That You Look Good on the Dance Floor” have a seductive feel that will get you off your seats and make you bounce. Songs like “Riot Van” and “When the Sun Goes Down” have a more mellow and beachy feel. So with lyrics like “Everybody's trying to crack the jokes and that to make you smile/Those that claim that they're not showing off are drowning in denial” you should probably go out and give the Arctic Monkeys a spin.
