Cibelle - The Shine of Dried Electric Leaves
- Birthed from an 18 month long period of travel, creative reflection, and fierce experimentation with pleasantly surprising instrumental fusions, The Shine of Dried Electric Leaves showcases São Paulo native Cibelle’s talents brilliantly. The sophomore project once again pairs Cibelle with São Paulo musician/producer Apollo Nove and features new artistic alliances with Parisian mixer Yann Arnaud, Brazilian musician/actor Seu Jorge of City Of God and The Life Aquatic fame, and French MC/beat boxer Spleen. Still core to Cibelle’s musical brews: her distinctly soft, smoky vocals, prolific storytelling, and lyrical command.
The Shine of Dried Electric Leaves opens with “Green Grass” which lends Cibelle’s quiet elegance to the Tom Waits original. “London, London”, recorded with Devendra Banhart is a lively cover paying a nod to celebrated Brazilian artist Caetano Veloso. “City People” with its electronic tinged production, soft chimes and acoustic instrumentals exudes an ethereal quality pleasing to the ears. Even more impressive is “Mad Man Song,” the collaboration with Spleen on which virtually all the sounds are produced by the duo, using their voices, tapping spoons, rattling sugar cubes, and swishing coffee.
The album, flows from one song to the next, the English tongue giving way to beautifully arranged Portuguese and French tracks. Examples include the playful, percussion fueled “Minha Neguinha” and the Brazilian flute and samba driven “Arrete La Menina.”. The Shine of Dried Electric Leaves hit stores this April, a musical event and cultural experience not to be missed.
