D.M.C. - Checks Thugs & Rock N Roll
- When an artist has already earned recognition as a hip hop pioneer and innovator, the love of music fans across the globe, the respect of peers and aspiring MCs alike, what’s next? Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniel’s answer comes in the form of Checks Thugs & Rock N Roll. Two decades since the roaring rise of D.M.C., after laying down cornerstones of hip-hop culture, including the genius rap/rock & roll alliance that still infuses today’s music scene; D.M.C. is stepping out on his own. The result: Checks Thugs & Rock N Roll is a solo debut that paints an intimate portrait of a more mature MC in the midst of self re-discovery and re-invention.

True to the title, expect the strong presence of rock and blues elements throughout but make no mistake, this is still hip hop. Featuring cross-genre collaborations such as the guitar wailing “Watchtower” with Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith, the blue, introspective “Find My Way,” produced by Kid Rock, and most notably, D.M.C.’s bumping remake of Harry Chaplin’s “Cat’s in the Cradle” with Sarah McLachlan, Checks draws on somber, edgy instrumentals as the vehicle for social commentary and personal revelations. Other guest appearances include Ms. Jade on the soulful, R&B driven “Cold” and “Come 2gether,” a call for peace and unity featuring Rev. Run.

The funky, throwback groove of “Lovey Dovey,” featuring the unmistakable Doug E. Fresh, makes a care-free departure from the contemplative tone of Checks with it’s light lyrics and shout outs to the lovely ladies and old school favorites Jodeci, Naughty by Nature, R.Kelly and L.L. Cool J. Otherwise, the album is very much a reflection of recent events in D.M.C.’s private life including suicidal bouts, the deaths of Jam Master Jay and his father, and the discovery of his adoption; as well as his grim observations on child abuse, gun violence, and warfare. Checks proves that D.M.C. still has plenty to say, but considering what’s on the airwaves these days, are fans still willing to listen?
