DJ Tiesto - In Search of Sunrise 5: Los Angeles
- When will this guy ever find that sunrise? Probably only after people stop buying his albums, which I'm not sure will happen since he's made a career out of sending the world the same stuff rehashed for years now. The theme of this compilation of "beeps" and "boops" from the "world's #1 DJ" (or so his web-site claims) is Los Angeles. I'm sure there is a reason for this. Los Angeles is on the cover, but he might as well have called this CD "Djibouti" or something esoteric like "the Future" because there's nothing in this music that really assaults with the title. In fact, there's nothing in this music to really grab you at all. I found myself in a sort of zero G free-fall the entire time as the tracks belted out the same pulsating electronic rhythms with the occasional addition of some completely decontextualized and inconsequential lyrics about...well, I'm not really sure what the hell they're talking about most of the time, especially when they switch from gibberish to English. Perhaps that is the power of Tiesto, who took his message that one only need a mixing board and other peoples' music to make your own unique, uh, "sounds" all the way from the dark and moody clubs of his native Holland to the opening of the Olympic Games in Athens.
There is some vigor to the argument made by proponents of Tiesto's brand of music that he, by delving into pure sound and concentrating on the acoustic aesthetics of everything (including the voices), has created something truly universal. The DJ's popularity across the ethnic boundaries and language divides of Europe and the world stand as strong evidence for proponents of such a theory. However, there are just as many out there who may find this isn't their cup of tea. There is something genuinely haunting about Tiesto's mixes and his seamless transitions from one set of rhythms to another speaks to his skill in the art.
However, minus a pumping club atmosphere the lilting tunes may be more likely to aid the troubled sleeper get his rest than keep him aware. Not good background music for studying, though it would probably fit well if you were passing through a dystrophic cityscape. AHA! LOS ANGELES!
