Tekno Punk
Recently I reviewed the work of one DJ Tiesto. I stand by my words, but after listening to the Speaker Junkies' album, "Tekno Punk," I have developed a greater respect for Dutch DJ's skills and acoustic sensibilities. This is not to say that the Speaker Junkies don't have qualities of their own. For instance, never have I listened to music that so thoroughly convinced me that I was on a futuristic spacecraft of some sort. The only problem was this starship wasn't going anywhere. Speaker Junkies, composed of "Tekno Tom" and "Rezn Tokes" (probably not their real names), boasts of performing sans turn-table.
that their music is apparently created entirely on-stage and by the artists rather than mixed from existing tracks would seem to promise an interesting take on techno music. Unfortunately, the resulting rhythms are just so...monotonous. I mean, how much of the same lazer noise with accompanying fake drum snap can a guy take, especially with songs at an average length of six minutes? These guys manage to make Phillip Glass sound dynamic. Apparently the duo accompanies their music with "stage antics," so perhaps the CD only gives you part of the experience that is "Tekno Punk".
And the music might go very well to technology hounds who are looking for music tracks for their video gaming sessions (Repetition and sci-fi sounds seem to go well as background music in video game.). Also, on a huge dance floor these tunes might make you wanna rock out with your...sock out. However, anyone who bought this CD who doesn't DJ or game that often may have discovered they just got tekno punk'd.
