k.d. lang - Reintarnation
- If you haven't heard of multiple-Grammy award winner and Canadian, k.d. lang by this point then you best just keep browsing pal. This stuff is not for you. In fact, it's not for me either. This anthology of the cow-punk/country-alternative/bluegrass vocalist recounts some of what I can only imagine are her best hits. As a first time listener I can definitely vouch for Ms. Lang being one who stands out against the crowd, but all the prior descriptions of her music (garnered from other critics) don't seem to apply necessarily to the selections available here. Perhaps it comes from mere ignorance, but most of these songs, especially with their echo-chorus accompaniment and tendency to stick with a piano/guitar acoustic duo, sounded more like old radio tunes or commercialized southern hits from the early 20th century than anything new-wave.
This is not a knock-as an old nostalgia hound I found the stylistic choices to be both unique and interesting. However, if you don't cotton to people trifling with the modern take on "traditional" county/bluegrass, then you might find this crooner pretty easy to quit. Do you get it? It's a reference! God, I'm clever.
