Various Artists - Downbeat the Ruler: Best of Studio One Killer Instrumentals, Vol.3
- As the spring gives way to the sultry heat of the summer, nothing will get you in the right frame of mind like Downbeat the Ruler: Best of Studio 1 Killer Instrumentals, Vol.3. Downbeat acts as a sampler of some the best musical compositions produced by Clement Coxsone Dodd, the pioneer of Studio 1, the first black-owned recording studio in Jamaica, and discoverer of Bob Marley. Widely considered one of the most influential figures in reggae, Dodd created some of the most recognizable and memorable grooves, which were often imitated but never duplicated.
Downbeat is an excellent compilation, serving as an auditory synopsis of some Coxsone’s key work. Dodd’s swaying rhythms can kick start a party or wind down a stressful day, setting the listener adrift on lazy waves of horns and drums. For those who don’t have the time or can’t afford a vacation, this compilation gives you fifty-seven minutes and twenty-seven seconds of Jamaican musical heaven. It’s an excellent entrée for those who are just becoming immersed in the sounds of reggae.
