Maria Friedman - Now and Then
- Not even the clear, lofty voice that has graced West End productions of “Ragtime,” “Chicago,” and “THE WITCHES of EASTWICK,” and carried her award-winning one woman show, “Maria Friedman by Special Arrangement” could save Andrew Lloyd Webber/Trevor Nunn’s “Woman in White.” Three-time Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman gave it her all, making a speedy recovery after treatment for Breast cancer and returning to the stage in time for the November 2005 opening. Despite her valiant efforts, this Broadway show could not go on, and only time will tell whether the buzz about a Tony nomination for her Rialto debut will recognize Friedman’s striking resilience and artistry during the short run. In the interim, fear not, the talent dubbed ‘London’s Broadway Baby,’ can be seen performing Sondheim at New York City’s Café Carlye and heard on her new CD, “Now and Then.”
Broadway and musical theatre aficionados will delight in this American debut showcasing Friedman’s vocal range and lavish accompaniments. Highlights including “I Happen to Like New York” and “If You Go Away”-- an English version of the Jacques Brel’s poetic “Ne Me Quitte Pas” once rendered by the legendary Nina Simone-- will charm (at least momentarily) even those who have not acquired a taste for musicals.
