Mitch Woods - Keeper of the Flame
- They say what goes around comes around. The rule applies to karma, fashion, and certainly to the world of music. On “Keeper of the Flame,” Mitch Woods re-introduces listeners to the jumpin’ boogie, and lively music of the 1940’s – Big Easy Style. Joined by greats such as American Blues great, singer, and songwriter James Cotton, (harp); blues giant and Father of the Boogie, John Lee Hooker (vocal & guitar); and Johnnie Johnson crowned Father of Rock & Roll (piano). Each track, from the swinging “Chicago Express” to the sweet progression of “Blues Hangover” features a legendary predecessor whose musicianship helps Woods bring down the house. Not well versed in this musical era, I can still appreciate the thrilling sound of experienced fingers tinkering on ivory keys, the blaring horns, and passionate sax solos, powerful bass grooves and the pull of rippling drum rhythms that flow through “Keeper of the Flame.” Released in 1996, this album pays tribute to the musical pioneers and innovators who inspired Mitch Woods’ career as a vocalist and pianist. Woods has since gone on to perform with his band, the Rocket 88s, spreading the love of swing, boogie woogie and big band music.
