Alice Peacock - Who I Am
- In general, Who I Am can be described as a country love letter to guys who are reeling from a recent break-up, but know deep-down they were right and it’s all her fault. Take the song, “Baby Come Back,” an urgent message addressed to the listener by some woman begging for her man to return because it’s him that’s hurting, and she was all wrong, and in the end she can’t live without him. Just like her to come crawling back asking forgiveness, eh…whoever “she” is supposed to be. Or take the song “Anybody But Me,” please! No, really. Take it! In all seriousness, the song is apparently a gushing farewell by Peacock to some unknown fellow in which she explains that, while she loves him more than the moon and stars, she is not deserving of his love and therefore she will leave to preserve his love and happiness. This is the stuff of those sappy Sunday made-for-TV movies turned on its head. This is like the Lifetime Channel for men speaking through Alice Peacock.

Now, I don’t want to sound like all of the songs are just different iterations of walking all over poor Alice Peacock. For instance, the album’s title track is almost a complete denouncement of the messages inherent in the previous songs. “Who I Am” is a strong-willed, “we shall overcome” style cheer for woman’s empowerment, so what is it doing in this album. Is there some sort of subtle meaning lying amongst these paradoxes except that women are prone to personality-altering mood swings? Hey, I can say it because I’m an obnoxious guy. The answer is no, there is no subtle meaning. Now go to the kitchen and get me a beer!
