Edgar Meyer - Edgar Meyer
- Three-time Grammy award winner Edgar Meyer opens his latest self-titled project with “First Things First,” as a simple, yet emotional piano solo soon runs along side the elegant pull of bass strings. Best known as a virtuoso double-bassist, Meyer has lovingly rendered all the instrumentation heard on this CD, voicing his stylistic arrangement and delivery through the vibrating bass currents, the gliding piano solos, the distinct resonance of the southern dobro, the presence of the da gamba and guitar, and the quick tempered pluck of the banjo. Every one of the fourteen tracks, with their complex aural layers were conceived and implemented through Meyer's genius, a fact that has not distorted this renowned artist’s sense of modesty and profound appreciation for his craft.

An elaborate dialogue of keys and strings, “Edgar Meyer” pulls listeners in different directions, but taps into the unifying pulses of classical, bluegrass, and country music. The best examples of Meyer’s fusion include the vibrant “Roundabout” that spans instrumental vicissitudes, bounding from feverish piano and bass to somber, enigmatic violin and banjo-driven measures. “Please Don’t Feed the Bear” plays on bluegrass sensitivity while the “Whatever” effortlessly conveys the depth of human sadness with gut-wrenching proximity. The jazz-feel of “Degrees of Separation” adds even more flavor to this creative mélange. Lovers of instrumental, classical, and folk music will find something if not much to savor.
