Pilots and Paper Planes - Burden of A Day
- Why is it that some bands find the necessity for vocals that vary between the human equivalent of cats coughing up hairballs, or a fussy baby with colic and mock-angelic, reedy murmurings? With all that effort to be heard, how come most of their lyrics become drowned in their screams? Why might people gravitate to Pilots & Paper Planes? Well, fans of such angry, distorted vocals and ripping rock look to P&PP and similar bands to carry the fading torch of raging metalcore and screamo brands of nu-metal. But, this music, having peaked in the mid 90’s - much like flat-tops, super acid-washed genes, Steve Urkel and other 90s relics- has run its course.
Then again, just because metalcore has fallen on hard times since its hey-day almost a decade before, that doesn’t mean the right band cannot resurrect the dormant beast. Try hard as they might, Pilots and Paper Planes cannot fill those shoes, at least, just going off of their latest effort, “Burden of the Day.” At best they are thunderous vocals and “punchy” drumming, at worst, they are tone-deaf and muffled/tired lyrics. Back to the drawing board, boys…
