David DeMordaunt - Blackbird's Lullaby
- Whether you want to call it avant-garde, non-traditional, alternative or just jazz rock, David DeMordaunt supplies his audience with one pleasant thrill after another in the album Blackbird’s Lullaby. It’s the crazy twang of that blasted guitar that takes center stage in this production, but this is no mere sampling of a lone front-man strumming away over an hour of your life-at least, not entirely. The guitar, piano and other instruments seem to take the jazz road at first, but then things take a twist once those haunting rock-alternative vocals kick in. I’m not sure what the guy is sputtering about, but the content of the songs is not nearly as striking as the brand of sound produced by the amalgamation.
It might not fly for some, especially jazz aficionados who might be quick to label me a quack for even contemplating this as having any jazz elements. But I’ll go farther and say that in some cases, that guitar will go off on tangents that are a saucy blend of country and south of the border sauce that I’ll just call Tex-Mex for simplicity’s sake. Confused? If you’re not than I haven’t done my job. This is pretty confusing stuff, especially if you go nuts and try to figure out what the heck the guy’s mumbling amount to. Forget it. Just appreciate for what it adds to the pieces from an acoustic aspect. The one thing I will say about the sound is that it gets progressively more alt-rock as it get weirder. Not a bad thing, but it’s a shame they couldn’t keep the experiment with jazz going very long.
