Apollo Up! - Chariots of Fire
- These guys would play well in frat basements I suppose. It’s that kind of music. Not hard enough to be acid rock, but moderately head-banging, lightly authority-trashing material that takes the high ground in content. They avoid language and threats of violence to talk about those things implicitly. For example, instead of saying “I’m gonna fuck you up,” they just get the same message across by saying the word, “rock.” It’s a sound dedicated to having fun rather than getting any deeper meaning across, and by fun I mean the thrills of hooliganism. So, you see how a bunch of guys and a trickle of girls at the campus of Anywhere U. might get a kick out of this while draining Dixie cups of cheap beer-o-hol and pretending they know what’s what.

There are a few stand-out moments here when the beats prove that Apollo Up! still has a few punk cells flowing through their veins. Still, they seem so spit-polished and careful about towing the spring-break, happy-that-I’m-angry rocker image that it’s hard not to lump these guys in with the lowest common denominator crowd of hopeful club players. I’m just not able to find anything in these guys’ lyrics and sound that distinguishes them. Maybe there’s something more to Apollo Up! but from this album I’m not seeing it.
