Cheap Trick - Rockford
- Hey, that’s a cheap trick! Debut track “Welcome to the World” has a little “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” fighting to shatter the thinly veiled distortion… It appears that blast from the past, classic rock die-hards, Cheap Trick, has swallowed that star, invigorating themselves with its renewing radiance. Who needs ambrosia to stay alive when you’ve got star power? Defying the odds, Cheap Trick - having emerged before the 80s era of spiked, extremely flammable hair and commercial rock- remains relevant today. The years come and go, and passing fads soon, well, fade, but some still laud the everlasting Cheap Trick the “greatest classic-rock band in the world.”
Settling into the decent dozen of pop-kissed, rock on “Rockford” is comparable to reclining in Bill and Ted’s awesome time machine. Love the 80s? Well let’s do the time warp again, shall we? (Not so much an 80’s reference as a time travel allusion, thank you.) There’s even a track called “Perfect Stranger” - Cousin Larry, Balki, is that you?- the debut single where Cheap Trick’s panache for upbeat, kicking rock tunes reminds genre fans why they fell in love in the first place. That’s ‘ditto’ for “Give It Away” and the roaring, infectious “Come On Come On Come On.” The Beatle-inspired “Oh Claire” is a reverent curtsy to legendary rock accomplished with far away instrumentals that swell in the presence of high-pitched, swaying vocals.
By the time closing track “Decaf” comes punching through your stereo, ohh, we’re halfway there, which is lucky since, some people if given the chance, would happily revel in the hey-day of classic rock for all time.
