Da Vinci Vox - The Hidden Message
- “In the beginning there was the word. And when reading between the lines between the notes and upon the staff, the truth will come to you…”
In 2006, a growing phenomenon threatens to eclipse the enigma of Da Vinci: the shameless proliferation of artists, peddlers and quacks trying to cash in on the high tide of this summer’s block buster. If Da Vinci is the new black, then Da Vinci Vox’s “The Hidden Message” is en vogue. And if “The Da Vinci Code” is a cash cow, then opportunists like French producer and mastermind Serge Mazères will milk her dry.
The mysterious narration of a ‘wise’ old woman lends to “The Hidden Message” a thin veneer of depth and secrecy, but this project’s determination to capitalize on the Da Vinci/Opus Dei media frenzy is nothing, if not transparent. Described as “the reflection of an era in continual mutation” and “the fruit of in-depth deep research and meticulous orchestrations,” - double allusion to profundity for effect - Da Vinci Vox enlightens with its concoction of mighty Gregorian chants, a medley of acoustic and electric instrumentals, and of course, the oh so enthralling power of spoken words.
“Ohh ohh ohh… ahh ahh ahh,” sung over muted electronic beats, a few ethereal harp scales for effect, and voila, you’ve done it – what exactly, is up to interpretation, but for now, you’ve created “The Keystone,” the somber piece that jumpstarts into a stretch of haughty “Ha ha ha’s” and 80s pop lurking just around the dark bend. (Do they want to get spiritual, or physical? Or wait, they’re probably deep enough to do both.) In keeping with the grating theme, “The Descendence of Mary of Magdeleine” rides a chorus of ‘ohms,’ and trilling mandolins. The only whispered questions missing: “Pssst – who put you up to this? Who sent you?” “The Fruit of Her Loins” is a series of orgasmic screams, and breathy murmurings over gliding electronic keys that leaves one confused- “Am I supposed to be listening to this? Is this even music?
What is revealed at the end of “The Hidden Message”? – Either no one knows or no one’s talking. Alas, the secret will die with the project’s conspirators and the brave souls who managed to consume this... thing… in its entirety. However, having at least attempted such a feat, I would not wish it on anyone else.
