All-Body Band - Slammin
- What’s this? A music group without instruments except what God gave them? Yes folks, at last the college sensation that’s sweeping the…country is coming to a CD player or walkman right near you. A cappella groups have continued to be all the rage on college campuses, and while there was always something amusing about the various clicks, whirs, sputters and gargles that would pass for accompaniment in the various takes on soft rock, pop or hip-hop tunes I really never found any of it “good” in the classical sense of the word.
Keep in mind, those college groups were a far cry in skill from what the people of the All-Body Band have to present in “Slammin.” The genre is a pleasant mix of fine soul with elements of R & B and hip-hop thrown in for good measure. Yet, how much enjoyment you derive from the songs on this album will likely be a testament to how well you embrace a cappella. If you’re like me then “Slammin” will disappoint. Sure, the fact they use their vocal chords instead of artificial instruments is a unique and interesting gimmick, but it still reads like a gimmick nonetheless. The fact is that while this is a great group of talents on display, I tend to think they would sound just as good or better sans the clicks and beat box vocal effects or, dare I say it, if they decided to include a few instruments.
I go to concerts of these types of groups on campus, but at least there they’re free. Here, I just end up wondering where else that $20 might have gone. Perhaps to a charity that teaches inner-city youth how to play the Cello. That thing can heal lives you know.
