Nancy Kelly - Born to Swing
- Nancy Kelly presents your all-time old favorites and a few less-notable numbers in this catchy, powerful collection that reminds me of Christmas, though I don’t know why. Maybe it’s just the heavy use of piano or the standard sax that seems to scream “yuletide office party,” but doesn’t (because a screaming CD would just be crazy). It’s all soft, mellow stuff that melts through one ear drum and then ends up bleeding into a page of some beatnik’s poetry notepad. Or maybe it just helps you relax. That’s the magic of jazz. Jazz, a little more than some other genres of music I believe, is capable of evoking vastly different responses from aficionados, and this album is no exception.
Of Miss Kelly I can only say that she is obviously very talented. This show-case isn’t enough to make a Kelliac out of me, but it’s all very pleasant. This kind of music makes me want to start up a nightclub, even a failing nightclub, just for the opportunity to book such artists on a regular basis. I guess that’s more a testament to the fact that there’s so much amazing talent out there that remains relatively undiscovered than to the qualities of the CD, but rest-assured, if you decide to buy this album you will not be disappointed. And if you are please don’t blame me. I know not what I do.
