Goran Ivanovic Group - Debut
- Back in old country we knew how things should be done. We knew how to serve our Babkas. Baked. We knew how to take our vodka. In milk jugs (unless you’re a westie, pussy!). We knew how we liked our ethnicities. Cleansed, with a hint of spring freshness. And, of course, we knew how we liked our music. Jazzy. Yes, jazzy! You think we didn’t know how to rooftop wail? In old country we invented the rooftop wailing! Before the wall fell I was head rooftop wailing engineer for the People’s Revolutionary Jazz Group #4117. This group does a good job of doing Eastern European-ish jazz. You should use your capitalist pig-dog money to buy this debut as a tribute to what they have accomplished.

You imperialists may have taken the moon from us, but we do not let you have jazz to yourself. Sure, the Goran Ivanovic Group (AKA the notorious G.I.G.) may not use crooning, but we don’t need your vocals and you’re crowing. This music is purely instrumental because instrumental is pure, harmonious. We are economical! But we have what you in the west have not been able to experience, a catchy eastern European flair heard in this album as that tendency towards depressing rhythms in practically every number. Also, the guitar really stands out for creating an ethereal, magical mood that recalls starry Slavic nights and gypsy encampments. Perhaps gypsies stand as the most enduring symbol of this brand of music, a people as rich in cultural heritage as they are deprived of practically everything else. They are a group whose celebrations seem to mix in seamlessly with their periods of mourning to the point that you can’t tell what they’re doing. Somehow this album captures that, and I love it. Comrade leader loves it. You shall love it too.

If you have never heard this brand of music before then I highly recommend this album to you as a chance to educate yourself. Or perhaps it would be better to call it a “re-educational” experience. Ho ho ho! I make funny! She is good, no?
