Damien Dempsey - Shots
- Songs about alcohol and other indulgences. Wow! No seriously, this is pretty potent stuff. It’ll put hair on your chest and send you dancing red-faced from the pub and back to your old stone farm where your angry wife waits, ready to douse you headfirst into a bucket of soggy bog water. Well, maybe it won’t do that, but this is some pretty outrageous, fun folk from a guy who sounds like a right decent hooligan. Did I mention that he sings a song about drinking? That’s a good one. One of many, I tell ye’.
“Shots” contains a range of folksy ballads about everything from the terrible fallout of colonization to the burdens of poverty and even how tough it is to just be Irish. You can tell he is speaking from first-hand experience, at least on the subject of being Irish, because of that thick accent and his tendency to make the music sound Irish by adding bag pipes and including lyrics how dirty them darn English knobs is. Personally, you can say what you want about the majestic beauty of your new-age Gaelic crap but for my shillings this kind of stuff is the next best thing to actually experiencing modern Ireland in all of its dismal beauty. By the time you get through this CD you too shall hate the blooming Brits…or maybe you’ll cling to them for support. Ulster!
