Ramona Borthwick - A New Leaf
- Ramona Borthwick’s debut CD “A New Leaf” has some sensational piano and many of the tracks one can picture themselves gracefully moving about the floor at an elegant nightclub. The title track has Borthwick’s expert piano playing along with Phil Grenadier on the trumpet, which makes for a calming selection. “Garbarero” has Borthwick making peculiar spoken sounds that could be interpreted as tribal. “Two’s Compliment” again merges Borthwick’s pianoforte with Grenadier’s trumpet but at a considerably swifter rate. “Home” invokes just what the title suggests; listening to it is like coming home. Borthwick tries to mimic the wave of the Miami Sound Machine in “Latin Quarter” but with the use of unlikely instruments not normally found in Latin songs and makes a valiant effort. “Baarah Sur” will get the desire to kick in with its steady run. “Lots Lake” has more of the tribal talk from Borthwick and inflects the bass guitar from Fernando Huergo. “Lifelines” doesn’t mesh with its title, it’s peppy and tuneful. Yet the trumpet on the bulk of the tracks does get monotonous and detracts from Borthwick’s skill. As an instrumental album it is lighthearted but for her next attempt Borthwick needs to alter her style just a bit.
