Dr. John - Mercenary
- Going through blues withdrawal? In need of a fix? Not to worry, the good
Dr. John’s in town and he makes house calls. On “Mercenary” a collection of cover songs performed by songwriter and founder of Capitol Records Johnny Mercer, Dr. John provides the solution to your musical disposition. With renditions of Mercer standards, like the blues-treated “Moon River”; the amusing “Save the Bones for Henry,”; and Dr. John’s personal bow to greatness “I Ain’t No Johnny Mercer,” the doctor has definitely returned to his longtime passion: blues music.
Following the 2005 “Sippiana Hericane,’ a post Katrina tribute to the ailing New Orleans of his childhood, “Mercenary” has the Doctor tinkering the ivory keys once more, after a stint as jingles voice-over talent. Although he had to leave New Orleans for Los Angeles in order to become the Dr. John we’ve come to know, the young Mac Rebennack – as he was then called – could never leave behind the region’s R&B and Mardi Gras influences which, incorporated with rock and lighthearted/husky vocals, create his signature style. On “Mercenary,” find out what one-time collaborators and fans like Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger have come to love of about the Night Tripper, Dr. John.
