John Pizzarelli - Dear Mr. Sinatra
- It takes a certain kind of class, sophistication and self-assured swagger to fill the shoes of the late, great Frank Sinatra and although no one can do it quite like ‘Ol Blue Eyes,’ John Pizzarelli - whose winning voice has saluted legends like Nat “King” Cole, Antonio Carlos Jobim and the Beatles - comes close to the prize. What’s more, this tribute finds a strong authenticity derived from the relationship between Pizzarelli and Sinatra. John, the son of jazz guitar legend and Sinatra collaborator, Bucky Pizzarelli, had the opportunity to open for Sinatra with his quartet during the early ‘90s. Looking back on the experience that allowed him to grace the same stage as “one of my main musical influences,” Pizzarelli recalls: “Frank would appear in the wings during our final number, swinging and clapping and smiling. He would come onstage and cheer for us. It was an honor to play with him…”
Pizzarelli’s velvety voice covers the classics- from “Ring-A-Ding-Ding” to “Witchcraft” to “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby,” -complete with lively jazz and big band accompaniment. A definitive, stunning tribute, “Dear Mr. Sinatra” features “songs that lent themselves well to the jazz idiom” and according to Pizzarelli, “… many of the songs we chose were written for him and went on to become standards, rather than songs that he merely performed.”
