Brett Dennen - So Much More
- The first few notes of “Ain’t No Reason,” float in and fill the room like a cool breeze dispelling the stagnant heaviness of a muggy summer afternoon. The unguarded sincerity of Brett Dennen’s vocals, immediately taps into the listener’s soul, before sweeping her away on a sweet cadence of accompanying instrumentals. As the seamless album progresses, it stimulates the senses, like an unexpected splash of cold water, lifting the hairs at the back of your neck, sending a familiar tingle up and down your spine.
Where ordinary statements of appreciation do not suffice, poetic metaphors stretch the limits of everyday vernacular and best approach the semblance of sublime subjects. In this case, “So Much More,” the sophomore release from the redheaded, troubadour, Brett Dennen, lifts the spirit on a current of expressive thought and musical jubilation. For instance, the irrepressible “Darlin’ Do Not Fear” pulses with West African rhythms, embracing Dennen’s refreshingly earthy, gravelly voice.
A kindred spirit to artists the likes of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Rufus Wainright and John Mayer, Brett Dennen’s musical feel, poetry and vocal candor are unique and unmistakable. Hard to classify, this young songwriter’s inspiration draws from the wells of folk, country and rock traditions, and is perhaps best described as a “soulful blend of everything that feels good.” A relatively new, un-clouted presence, Dennen moves from the subject of a warring world (“I Asked When”) to coming of age (“When You Feel It”) with glowing grace.
“So Much More” hits store shelves this September. Disarming lyrics and guitar in tow, Dennen will capture your imagination this fall as surely as the season’s beautiful foliage of deep reds and oranges.
