Bruce Cockburn - Life Short Call Now
- Bruce Cockburn has been a singer/song writer for over 35 years and his experience shows in his latest album, “Life Short Call Now.” His new album is filled with great melodies and well-constructed lyrics. This is the sort of album that sucks the listener in, once you start listening to it, you want to keep hearing it until its over.
Even instrumental numbers such as “Peace March” have a strong life-affirming sort of grove you can vibe to despite the lack of vocals. When he does sing, however, he has a pleasant voice with a sort of edge to it that reminds me of Johnny Cash in his later years. One particular song that stands out for its vocals is the second track “See You Tomorrow.” The harmonization on the track is truly beautiful and makes for a very strong piece.
The title track, “Life Short Call Now” is an insightful look at society; it’s over commercialization and the fast pace of life in the 21st century. “Slow Down Fast” is another track on this subject of the fast pace of life; this track stands out because it has a much faster pace than the rest of the album and a fast breakdown reminiscent of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the fire.” A song that is particularly poignant at this time is Cockburn’s comment on the Iraq war “This is Baghdad” a line which is particularly haunting and sums up the devastation and misleading language used in this war: “Firebombed and carjacked and kidnapped and shot. How do you like it this freedom we brought?” This line sums up the whole argument against the war. As a whole this album is glorious from start to finish and should be taken strongly into anyone’s consideration.
