Gerry Gibbs & the Thrasher Big Band - Live at Luna
- A treasure of musical savoir-faire, Gerry Gibbs & the Thrasher Big Band’s “Live at Luna,” breathes new life into the popular type of music with a potpourri of compositions that will make you want to get your hands on whoever is nearby and dance. The first track, “Caribbean Song,” is a carefree one that perfectly details the island paradise. The next track, “Night the Blytheman Walked into the Room, The Room Went Dark and Nothin” can conjure up a mental picture of a seductress sauntering into the room, her intentions unknown. “When I Dream,” has a proper title since one could fall into a deep contented sleep while listening to this song, a departure from the “get up and go” of the rest of the album. “You’ve Changed,” commissions a female vocalist that speaks of an unwelcome modification in an individual she held dear with lines like, “You’ve changed, the sparkle in your eyes is gone.” The beat goes right back to high with “Some Skunk Funk,” where one would be hard pressed to not want to jump onto the dance floor and let loose. The sixth track, “Maiden Voyage,” brings back the female vocalist but she repeats “La La La” monotonously and the happy-go-lucky of the song is then lost. “11 Years Old,” has a nostalgic intro and could be a song played in the background of a childhood flashback in a big budget motion picture. In this reviewer’s opinion, Gerry Gibbs & the Thrasher Big Band’s “Live at Luna,” is an outstanding taste of big band bravado not to be missed.
