Gym Class Heroes - As Cruel as School Children
- This upstate New York band intermingles hip-hop and rap into an irregular combination of catchy rhythms with some light comedy mixed in. “As Cruel as School Children,” by Gym Class Heroes is definitely something quite different from the usual. “The Queen and I” evokes visions of a high school or frat party situation with such lyrics as, “I made the mistake of letting her drink again, but who the hell am I to tell her how to run her life?” “Shoot Down the Stars” resembles rapper Eminem’s hit “Guilty Conscience.” “New Friend Request,” is a track that describes a scene most guys have experienced with lines like, “I remember when I first laid eyes on you…but I was too shy to say hi, when I finally worked up the nerve to drop a line.” “Clothes Off!” parodies the 80s hit by the late Jermaine Stewart “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off.” The fifth track, “Sloppy Love Jingle, Pt. 1,” sounds like open-mic night at a college since its one of the band members speaking fervently about a girl at the other end of the bar. Another spoof rears its head in “Viva la White Girl,” an obvious play on Ricky Martin’s 1999 smash, “Livin’ La Vida Loca.” This latest album by the Gym Class Heroes leaves its mark and could position the band for massive profit given their unpredictable temperament.
