Lee “Scratch” Perry - Panic In Babylon
- If you are a fan of primo reggae grooves, then Lee “Scratch” Perry’s “Panic In Babylon” will send you into a frenzy. The White Belly Rats, a Swiss reggae band lend Perry a helping hand on the album and their influence is shown throughout. The opening track, “Rastafari,” has a representative reggae stroke and one can picture dreadlocks flying seamlessly in the air. “Purity Rock” has a techno touch with distorted sounds mixed in. “Pussy Man” has a sensuous Caribbean softness. For those unaccustomed with the reggae style of music, the lyrics might be incomprehensible. “Fight to the Finish” begins with an announcement, “Leo ‘Scratch’ Perry is in the arena.” “Voodoo” has jungle and voltaic sounds that give the song a ghostly feeling. The title track must have been recorded at a concert of Perry’s since devotees cheering can be heard in the background. “I’m A Psychiatrist” has an off-the-wall track name along with weather and lightning sounds that are shuddersome. “Inspector Gadget 2004” seems to be reggae/techno homage to the cartoon’s theme song with some twists. Most of the songs on the album sound identical but if you are a reggae fan, then the sultry beats of Lee “Scratch” Perry’s “Panic In Babylon” is your ticket to paradise.
