Bruno Herbert Trio and B3 Kings - A Cellar Live Christmas
- “A Cellar Live Christmas” alternates between the trio of Bruno Herbert and the quartet of B3 Kings. On the first track, “Jingle Bells,” I thought I was listening to the “Napoleon Dynamite” soundtrack. When the songs start, it’s hard to decipher which holiday-themed song it is until the lyrics come. The second track is a mellow take on the classic “Little Drummer Boy.” I normally prefer the dramatic intense side of this song. This version never really gets going. “O Little Town of Bethlehem” is soothing with the saxophone playing throughout. I instantly think of Kenny G and I again hear the “Napoleon Dynamite” music. The brilliant piano is in full effect in “God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman.” “We Three Kings” is one of the standout tracks, as you can sing along.

There are a few throwaway tracks from the album, but I’m sure any jazz enthusiast will be proud of the album. Even the non-fan, myself included, can put on this CD while decorating the Christmas tree or preparing the big meal and find it relaxing and enjoyable. The better tracks are accompanied by lyrics and a voice. The only upsetting part about the album is the lack of my favorite Christmas song, “O Holy Night.”
