Tobin Sprout - Songs From The Movie Fortunes
- “Songs From the Movie Fortunes” is one of those rare soundtracks that are tied into a key artist that creates a greater sense of an album in its own right rather than simply a companion album for a film. In this case the artist is Tobin Sprout, former member of Guided by Voices. Tobin has a great voice and his songs are well constructed in a style reminiscent of The Beatles. This album, despite the occasional track by other artists, fits together like a sort of ‘Best of Tobin Sprout’ album. That is not to say the tracks by the other artists don’t add a lot to the richness of the album, because they do. Tracks by Chris Day, Ronald Raskin and the Mulchmen all fit beautifully next to Sprout’s tracks. This all fits together into a great rock album.

Of course, in addition to forming together into an album that can stand up on its own strength the tracks do represent music from the film “Fortunes.” Widely available on DVD this film is a smart comedy that’s worth checking out. In a way both individual works of art in their own right, the film and the soundtrack form together into one cohesive whole. This is a great album for those familiar with the film, and even those who are not.
