Wednesday 13 - Fang Bang
- In a struggle to be a fiery hard rock band, Wednesday 13 gives us “Fang Bang.” The lead singer’s vocals are raspy which is a benchmark when it comes to hard rock but after a lot of screaming it just gets to be tedious to hear. The first track displays said voice with a macabre element to it and the statement, “More than words” is repeated ad nauseum, which could turn listeners off. The second track has electric guitar work but the guttural voice is now howling doomful lyrics like, “There is something in the shadows.” The ominous lyrics turn funereal in the third track with lines like, “I’ve got nothing to lose, that’s why I’m with you. My x-ray glasses don’t lie and the best thing about our future is knowing that I’m gonna die.” The fourth track goes from deadly to vulgar with the line, “He loves to rock out, with his cock hanging out.” Throughout the album, drums overpower the lyrics while laboring to drive home the record’s largely lethal message. It seems at times the lead singer is trying to copy the vocal stylings of Metallica’s James Hetfield with his rough voice and malefic lyrics but the incessant yelling just doesn’t live up to Hetfield’s handiwork. The band members playing the drums and electric guitar are competent but the lyrics are malignant and could alienate legitimate hard rock fans that are looking for something more. Wednesday 13 could be a dynamite hard rock band but they need to re-evaluate their lyrics, tone down the wailing and find their own sound.
