Allen Gogarty and the Wadds - Creature
- Allen Gogarty is a quite original folk-rock artist who’s voice and style invoke the names of others: R.E.M., Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and maybe even Radiohead in an odd way. “Creature” is a beautifully performed group of poppy, folky ballads that are light and memorable with wonderfully catchy and beautiful rhythms. Allen is not alone in working on this beautiful album; he is joined by his band The Wadds (or Wads, the spelling varies even on his own Web site.) The Wad(d)s are made up on this recording by Dean Marchi on bass, Wilson Montuori on lead guitar and Dave Hingerty on drums (Dave is replaced on the road by Aaron Brooks, due to Hingerty’s other touring projects.) All together this is a great band who makes beautiful music, which stands on its own attributes and is certainly different and worth a listen. The album reminds me of “Salesmen and Racists” by Ike Rielly, though the two albums don’t sound anything alike, they are both fresh and different albums with the feeling of an album you’ve heard a million times; it’s this sort of “instant classic” feel that albums such as this one have that makes it well worth the attention of anyone. This is just such a well made album that its sure to receive a lot of immediate play from anyone who buys it, while still being listened to years down the road.
