Anya Singleton - Not Easy To Forget
- A dyed-in-the-wool blue vixen, Anya Singleton’s “Not Easy To Forget,” delivers commanding tracks that convey the truth of the blues. Though the album only contains six tracks, each is more potent then the next. In the great tradition of the masters of the genre, Singleton at times wails her feelings and at other times speaks softly giving the album a converse presence that will speak to true blues buffs. “I’m Just Fine” has throbbing guitar and lines like, “You might think I’m happy, don’t see the clouds in the sky, I hardly ever cry, baby I’m just fine.” The second track is the title track about a wish that wasn’t fulfilled with lines like, “Do you remember birthdays? Well, yesterday was mine. They threw a party for me... there was cake and streamers but I could not eat a bite. I made a wish for a dreamer… cuz you’re not easy to forget.” “Slow Man” has piano and organ work and from its lyrics gives the notion Singleton got into a sticky situation with lines like, “I saw blue lights flashing, where the hell was I?” “Silver or Gold” has more piano work and recollects about a marriage gone by the wayside with lyrics like, “I remember when we were man and wife.” “One Trick Pony” has a dance beat to it which listeners can contemplate grabbing their partner and getting down to while forgetting the nuances of the song with lines like, “You’re a one trick pony, you’ve got a one track mind.” The last song, “The Nearness Of You,” has guitar work and is a mushy ballad explicating one’s innermost emotions. This song could be belted out in a smoldering blues club with lines like, “It’s not the pale moon that excites me, that thrills and delights me, oh no. It’s just the nearness of you.” Anya Singleton’s “Not Easy To Forget,” will stick in blues fans minds as well as those who can embrace a fine vocalist who knows her stuff.
