Barenaked Ladies - Are Me
- The Barenaked Ladies’ new CD “Are Me” is the band’s first album under their new label. The band tries a different style on this new album. The songs are slower and more ballad like. This 13-track compilation is the first in a set. The second, entitled “The Barenaked Ladies Are Men” will be in stores in January.
Fans expecting the bands usual silliness might come up short. This album is more serious. However, is it really that shocking that the band grew up over the 15-year period they’ve been in the spotlight? All their other albums have been building to this point. I think this record isn’t as good as their previous albums. In my opinion when they try to explain serious concepts like love, which they have sung about before, they get a little sappy. For example, one of the tracks on this album sings about how “love will conquer all” that seems a little far reaching. I don’t usually expect such an epiphany from Barenaked Ladies songs. I always enjoyed that when they sang about love it was always stupid silly things.
Overall, I think the quintet: Steven Page, Tyler Stewart, Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan and Kevin Hearn had been working their way to this level of seriousness, but I’m not sure that it works for their band. I think they should stick to the loveable, though goofy songs listeners found on previous CDs.
