Johnny Lang - Turn Around
- Johnny Lang is a very accomplished blues singer and guitarist; however, he is not a gospel singer. On this album Johnny seems to spend too much energy trying to sound like a gospel singer and in that effort some passion is missing. Not to say he is not passionate about the music, but it sounds like he is trying too hard to imitate a certain style and in there the emotions seem to be misdirected and it does not sound like he cares what he’s singing about. The album tends to run together and there does not seem to be a lot of variation in tracks. The songs just were not composed that well, leaving a huge burden of Johnny to pick up the slack and he is only marginally successful.
The album is not horrible to listen to and is even kind of funky at times, but then it’s also kind of grinding. These songs are fun if you listen to them one at a time, but they don’t work together in any way that is interesting or original. This is quite a disappointment from an accomplished musician; it is not to say he should only do blues, he is perfectly capable of branching out, but he needs to spend more time on composition if he wants to be successful doing it.
