Madeleine Peyroux - Half The Perfect World
- Madeleine Peyroux’s third album “Half The Perfect World” symbolizes a singer whose reflective lyrics speak to a listener’s spirit. “I’m All Right” has organ work from Sam Yahel and Peyroux’s striking guitar savvy accentuates a song describing a relationship that has lost its luster with lines like, “You made me laugh, you made me cry, you smoked your stogies in bed but I’m all right, I’ve been lonely before.”

In “The Summer Wind” the union of the song’s hypnotically rhythmic tone and piano play from Yahel portray a crisp mental image for the listener as Peyroux expounds on a tranquil scene with lines like, “The summer wind came blowin’ in from across the sea and lingered there so warm and fair to walk with me. All summer long we sang the song and strolled on golden sand two sweethearts and the summer wind.” “Blue Alert” speaks of a man whom Peyroux can’t seem to forget with lyrics like, “His perfume in the air, bits of beauty everywhere.” “Half The Perfect World” has four original songs that were co-written by Peyroux.

The album is also comprised of some covers and duets that add serenity to the album. One example is Peyroux’s mild version of Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin.’” A double threat follows; K.D. Lang joins Peyroux on a cover of the Joni Mitchell staple, “River.” Needless to say, “Half The Perfect World” might be an understatement to those who revel in an album that has inventive compositions and covers that give the originals competition.
