Al Petteway - Winter Tidings
- A Celtic elegance with a folk twist to holiday classics is how to describe Al Petteway’s “Winter Tidings.” With an eclectic mixture of instruments such as the Irish Bouzouki and Celtic Harp, an Irish feeling is added to these customary festive ditties.
“Breakin’ Up Christmas” begins with percussion, then proceeds with acoustic guitar work. Right off the bat, the sound is not indicative of a typical Christmas song album. Next is “Joy To The World,” which has what sounds like a fretless bass guitar and maybe the banjo that puts a new age spin on this established song. “The Holly and the Ivy” has more acoustic guitar work and what sounds like a fiddle. “Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella,” opens with piano play that listeners can picture hearing as the snow cascades outside and as children carouse while building snowmen.
If you are of Irish heritage and want that reflected in your holiday tunes, then Al Petteway’s “Winter Tidings” is a red-letter example. You can listen to this album while you enjoy the companionship of your family beside the fireplace, or if you are alone, these songs will lighten your mood and make you bask in the true merriment of the holiday season.
