Kenny Garrett - Beyond the Wall
- Kenny Garrett’s debut album on the Nonesuch record label, entitled “Beyond the Wall,” has splendid instrumental work from a variety of performers. “Calling” has drum work from Brian Blade and has an ancestral vibe with its pounding. The second track is the title track and it has alto saxophone work from Garrett along with more drum work from Blade and piano play from Mulgrew Miller. “Qing Wen” has more alto saxophone play from Garrett and piano work from Miller. “Realization (Marching Toward the Light)” has chanting, similar to the popular Benedictine Monks, that makes the song sound very ecclesiastical and the drum work from Blade and tenor saxophone work from Pharoah Sanders reinforces this feeling. “Tsunami Song” has more piano work as well as tenor saxophone from Sanders which portray the pain that such a natural disaster can cause. “Now” has an immediacy to it that coincides with its title. All in all, Kenny Garrett’s “Beyond the Wall” has an eclectic gathering of performers aiding the artist in his mission toward instrumental perfection.
