Craig & Dean Phillips - Top of My Lungs
- The music is spectacular in the new album from Craig and Dean Phillips, “Top of my Lungs,” however, the lyric writing is anything but.
This is a Christian album, with strong instrumentals that sound more like an adult-alternative album than a Christian album. Many of the sounds had me tapping my feet or head bobbing along to the music. The group also slows down and has the songs to which you can see crowds raising their arms and swaying back and forth.
However, many of the lyrics seem to be corny and too direct. In the song “Saved the Day,” one of the ballads on the album, the lyrics are; “Three days and they were looking for body/but you were gone/and now I know/You Saved the Day.” Maybe it is because it is Christian music or they wanted to be direct with the listener, but all the songs lack depth in the lyrics. The songs seem very topical, which seems to ruin the strength of the instrumental backgrounds.
While the music was extremely strong I was hoping for something more lyrically from Craig and Dean Phillips’ “Top of My Lungs.” That being said, it is still a worthy Christian album to which fans of the genre should give a listen.
