Bob Dylan - Modern Times
- I have never been a big Bob Dylan fan. I have never found his raspy, hard to understand voice all that inviting. Many of his songs I consider to be too “hippy” for my taste.
That being said, Modern Times, Dylan’s newest release, is something that I really enjoyed.
The CD has a very American/bluegrass feel. It is something I could see someone listening to while driving across the greater plains. The album seems to be very simple in its musical stylings, with an emphasis on Dylan’s voice. I still find him hard to understand at times, but the focus on Dylan’s voice is what many of his fans have grown to love. Some of the songs on the album tend to move away from the bluegrass feel and almost sound like lounge songs, including “Nettie Moore.”
“The Levee’s Gonna Break” is the New Orleans disaster song many of his fans heard before the album hit the shelves. The song provides a good recap of the tragic days in the Big Easy, and could be a good teaching tool for those looking for a six minute history of the disaster.
Modern Times is quite possibly the only Dylan album I've liked. Maybe I never liked him because I wasn’t alive during the days when his message was most popular, but now that I’m alive during modern times, I actually enjoyed this album.
