Paul Jackson - Funk on a Stick
- Funk on a Stick is the second solo release from legendary jazz bassist, Paul Jackson. However, to label this album under the pure jazz genre would be a misnomer because the disc is truly a jazz-rap-funk fusion. The title track gets two treatments on the album; the first being a catchy funk tune with soulful vocals and the second as a pure instrumental in which the electric guitar shines.

Jackson is also well known for his work as one of The Headhunters, a group he founded with Herbie Hancock, and as a visionary of jazz fusion music. Black Octopus, his first solo release, was also met with much critical praise.

The bass rhythms of “In God We Funk,” and the deep vocals of “Pain” are the highlights of this disc, although the majority of the tracks are quite enjoyable if you aren’t a total jazz purist. Jackson scores again here with Funk on a Stick, and continues to be an innovator in the jazz fusion scene.
