Joe Ross - The Spirit of St. Louis
- A veritable cornucopia of sentimental Bluegrass ditties, The Spirit of St. Louis, by Joe Ross, delivers tales of the simple life in superb musical detail. “The Logger’s Song” is a sanguine account of a plain man’s daily grind, with such lyrics as, “It’s four o’clock and time to rise…daylight dawin’ and it’s time to go to work…I’m an Oregon logger, the forest is my home, with my coat and my ax and saw, from camp to camp I roam, everyday’s a challenge that provides me with a test…in the land of the great northwest.” “The Homefire” speaks of Ross’ hankering for his childhood and the pleasures of the past, with lyrics like, “Life was a joy, the sun shone bright. I never thought the roses would die…I left the old farm and now that I’ve grown, I miss these childhood days.” “One Legged Turkey” is an instrumental song with a hoedown-like vibe to it, complete with expeditious guitar work which exhibits Ross’ skill and flair. On “The River in Oregon,” Ross talks about his favorite waterway, with lyrics like, “The wind cries like a dove. I come to ride the flowing tide on the river I love.” The Spirit of St. Louis, from Joe Ross, proclaims the meaning of life and all its natural delights.
