Street Dogs - Fading American Dream
- An album about the band’s constant irritations is how to describe Fading American Dream, by Street Dogs. “Common People” begins with screeching feedback, then the guitar riffs are addressed by Tobe Bean, Ted Hutt and Marcus Hollar. The song blares about the ordinary man and his trials and tribulations, with lyrics like, “I’ve got so much fire burning inside…Got so much frustration.” Mike McColgan’s vocals convey his need to vent his pent-up emotions in song. “Not Without A Purpose” has more guitar play from Bean, Hutt and Hollar, but this track adds pounding drum work from Joe Sirois. The song could be an anthem at a protest rally with its infectious chant-like lyrics such as, “It’s not without a purpose! It’s not without a fight! I’ve got three tales to tell you, so just sit tight. It’s the story of the underdogs…Not without a purpose, not without a fight!” “Fatty” has bass guitar work from Johnny Rioux and drum play from Sirois. It’s a song about a boy who was ridiculed at school for his heaviness and didn’t have the strength to fight back. The song has pathetic lyrics such as, “Everyone pointed at him and laughed…His suicidal thoughts would always pass. There’s just one thing I want to know when you have nowhere to go…How many times did you want to die?” Street Dogs’ Fading American Dream is filled with songs about disillusionment and unleashing the band’s unhappiness at the supposed status quo. If you want an album to play when you are just plain mad at the world, then this is it!!
