Cornmeal - Feet First
- Self-labeled as “Chicago’s Premier Progressive Bluegrass Band,” Cornmeal fiercely blends banjo, fiddle, string bass, guitar, and drums into a pleasant listening experience. Feet First is the group’s third release, and follows 2003’s Tales From Magic Stone Mountain, which received much critical praise and big airplay on college radio.
Cornmeal sets itself apart from the usual jam-band fare with exceptional vocal harmonies and top notch instrumental ability. I must admit that the bluegrass genre doesn’t usually set me on fire, but I couldn’t resist tapping my foot to “River Gap” and “Hillbilly Ride,” two tracks packed with energy and a blazing banjo. Feet First slows it down a bit on “Another Lonesome Road” and “The Girl I Left Behind,” but remains effective with emotional Americana storylines.
This is a well-made album to which listeners will catch themselves in a "yee-haw" moment more than once. A definite must for the bluegrass crowd, and big thumbs up for country and jam-band fans.
