Brian Groder - Torque
- Fluid flute play and sultry saxophone work make up Brian Groder’s Torque. “Spellcast” does just what the title implies, it casts a bewitchment on the listener with saxophone play from Sam Rivers and whipping drum work from Anthony Cole. “Betwixt” has scintillating and mind-blowing trumpet jetting from Brian Groder, all backed up by Cole on drums. “Diverting Orbits” has more saxophone play from Rivers and drum play from Cole, but the drums drown out the proficient sax and could have been toned down a tad. “Behind The Shadows Part 1” has wide-ranging flute blowing from Rivers and the sax combo makes this track a light and dapper one. “Behind The Shadows Part 2” continues the feathery flute play with the sax accompanying it. “Iota” has flugelhorn work from Groder. It has more of a daunting pitch and might be a song in a movie about a man meandering down a smoke-filled alley at a crossroads in his life and trying to figure out his next move. Brian Groder's Torque is an exemplary representation of festive jazz and jazz that broods.
