G.R.I.T.S. - Redemption
- Redemption, by G.R.I.T.S., is an album filled with relentless rapping and some harmonizing kneaded in for a sound with which traditional rap and hip-hop fans might be unacquainted. “We Workin” has percussion and electronic sounds throughout, with talk at the intro such as, “Yeah, well never see you comin' with this one right here.” It flows like a broadcast that the band has arrived and that listeners will feel their presence. Then the rapping begins with lines like, “The beast has awakened…Chosen to bring Jehovah through.” “Holla @ Ya” has harmonizing with a female vocalist and more electronic sounds. It talks about a female doing what she wants but the band disagreeing with her activities, saying that she is worth more, with lines like, “Let me holla @ ya, come on you better than that…It will only take a second, shorty listen to me...I know you doin’ your thing but let me explain…Baby girl are you okay? Are you okay? It’s kind of lookin’ like a bad day…Cuz we go way back like Easy-Bake ovens kept the batter in the fridge…Go and take a load off and chit chat with your brotha.” “Heyyy” is a good song to get a party jumpin’ with the “Heyyy” echoed repeatedly in the background. It's also a great song to get a crowd inflamed, with such lines as, “Haters cater to the ideals…At the sight of my wheels.” “Tight Wit These” has what sounds like bells in the intro but then turns ominous with snapping and low beats. Its lyrics don’t sound as augury as the melody, with lines like, “If you tight wit these, bob ya head.” Redemption, by G.R.I.T.S., is an album that has interesting lyrics for a rap and hip-hop directed album and unique sounds that are unusual to this genre of music, which could bring new listeners into the fold.
