Elisabeth Lohninger - The Only Way Out Is Up
- Elisabeth Lohninger’s The Only Way Out Is Up has a selective mixture of brooding sonnets and fast-paced ditties that are sure to heat your blood or tickle your dancing fancy.
“Mirage” starts off the album and is a saucy and sultry song. Its beat is sensual and Lohninger’s voluptuous voice croons proclamations of love, such as, “Darkest hour before morning, we have found each other’s arms, swaying and swooning to a silent rhythm. Not a care but to dare love’s wicked charms. Trust me to guide you in the darkness. Let me show where my dream of beauty sleeps, it is not a place that can be found in daylight.” The drums, percussion and piano all blend together for a steamy song filled with innuendo.
“The Weather in New York City” is an acute contrast to the preceding track. Its lyrical flow is lightning fast along with a jazzy tone. It continues the piano, percussion and drum trifecta, but with a radiant feeling. Lohninger muses about gallivanting down a thoroughfare without a bother in the world, with such lines as, “I walked down Avenue A, the blizzard pounding away, snow fallin’ in New York City…Cold wind blows without pity…Bless the weather in New York City, you never know what the weather brings, oh no you don’t, you never know what the weather brings no you don’t.” Lohninger’s voice has a burst of verve that is hard to ignore and impossible not to smile at, while thinking of the “City that Never Sleeps.”
The title track is an anthem for self betterment. Its piano play accompanies its telling lyrics, such as, “The only way out is up, the only way out is up, the only way out is up, you better get up and get your butt out of the mud.” Lohninger wants to implore listeners to shape up, clean up their act and get down to the business of living, with this song.
On “Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most,” speedy drum play makes for another jazz-filled romp, and Lohninger’s lively lyrical pace is ambitious and fun. The lines of the song include, “Spring this year has got me feelin’…I lie in my room starin’ up at the ceiling…Morning’s kiss wakes bees and flowers and to them I’d like to drink a toast.” The imagery here calls to mind all the beautiful facets of the time, and paints a glorious picture in listeners’ thoughts.
The Only Way Out Is Up, by Elisabeth Lohninger, has something for everyone, quixotic tracks and ones that are flush with joy and good cheer.
