Oojami - Boom Shinga Ling
- Oojami’s latest album, Boom Shinga Ling, is a huge burst of energy that grabs and puts the listener in a trance of flute playing and techno beats and rhythms. The record brings about an innovative and produces a more polished sound.
The album’s title track says, “We’ve got to keep on skankin’ [a form of dance].” And dance you will! Oojami paints a bright and vibrant picture that makes the listener want to dive into the colors and move. More specifically, move your stomach. One can practically see the snakes rising from the basket to the album’s flute motif in a hypnotizing dance.
In “Wake Me Up,” while a back up dancer sings, lead singer Necmi Cavli breaks out into a fast-paced rap that is mind boggling and reminiscent of Jamaican dance hall. It is too easy to get lost in the rhythm of his voice.
But Oojami is far more than catchy music, as mesmerizing and fun as it is. When one can decipher the lyrics, such as in “What Kind of World,” you can hear, “What kind of world are we livin’ in, so many people that are suffering, planes crashing into buildings...information that is misleading...do you keep you mouth shut or fight for freedom?...It’s up to you to choose your own way.” You realize that Oojami is singing about issues that could hit hard for some. They dance for a cause, if you will.
The last two tracks, “Zor” and remix of “Chicky,” are straight up music where one can truly let their feet loose before the magic is over.
