Dollyrots - Because I’m Awesome
- The sophomore album from the Dollyrots, entitled Because I’m Awesome, is a punk album fused with some pop elements and rockin’ instrument play. Now a part of Joan Jett’s record label, Because I’m Awesome has some traditional punk basics but with some curveballs mixed in.

The title track starts off the album and it seems to be an ode to the vocalist herself. In it she boasts about all her fabulous qualities compared to others she is acquainted with. She lists those traits that make her so remarkable, in lyrics like, “I got a new style. Uh oh and I’m walkin’ right down the street…The one everyone wants to meet. I always tell you how cool you dress…You’re smarter, better, no the best. Just look at me, I’m a leader, I’m a winner…Cuz I’m awesome, I don’t need you, cuz I’m awesome that’s right.” This declaration is backed up by drum work from Chris Black and Amy Wood, along with guitar play from Luis Cabezas, which completes this sounding off about how great the vocalist is.

“My Best Friend’s Hot” is a song about unrequited love for a friend. The vocalist is decreeing their admiration for their chum and is asserting that he doesn’t seem to share her feelings, with lines like, “My best friend’s hot, my best friend’s hot, I’m not gonna tell you all the things I might like till you apologize to me, to me, to me for being such a tease, a tease, a tease…My best friend’s hot, my best friend’s hot, no matter what I do he loves me not.” There is more hammering of the drums by Black and Wood, along with guitar strumming from Cabezas. It’s kind of a depressing song about a love that will never go beyond friendship.

On “Out of L.A.,” there is blistering bass work from Kelly Ogden. One can envision this song being heard as a group of pals sail away in their car on their way out of the “City of Angels,” on the lookout for new adventures, with lines like, “A drivin’ hot day. The whiskey warms my body, up through the desert we’re passing it means we’re on our way, we’re on our way out of L.A…So sick and broken not gonna make it past halfway we’re on our way out of L.A.” The vocalist is expressing her discontent at the possibility that she and her companions might not make it out of the city and listeners hope, despite the downtrodden imagery, that they do escape Los Angeles.

The Dollyrots' Because I’m Awesome is a true punk record with songs about displeasure, and hard instrument play which conveys their never give up attitude. The vocalist’s timbre is a bit more upbeat than traditional punk albums, but that’s what sets this album apart from the others.
