Jason Gray
All The Lovely Losers

Unforgettable ballads and upbeat rocking tunes describe Jason Gray's All The Lovely Losers. Some listeners might be thwarted from the album given its ornery title, but many of the songs are declarations of love and introspectives into the heart and mind of Gray that will imbue listeners to really trowel into the lyrics.

The first track has bubbly guitar work, but the message of the song is somewhat dismal. It seems to be about the unwanted in the world, the supposed interlopers wishing to be part of the "in crowd," with lyrics like, "Losers, all the lovely losers. You never thought you'd hear your name. Outside, always on the outside. Empty at the wishing well but time will tell." Gray is musing about how some are trying to bypass their unfavorable station in life, but time is ever so slowly creeping up on them.

The second track has a techno and futuristic bend to it with guitar, drum, percussion work and what sounds like a synthesizer. It has a dreamlike appeal to it as Gray talks about an adjustment in him that has revised how he feels about a certain female and how without her, the simple act of drawing breath seems unamenable, with lyrics like, "I used to move so easy to the rhythm of your heart but these days I'm always stumbling over everything I start/You sing me like a song but lately to be honest I'm too tired to sing along. So touch my lips and set your words upon my tongue. Be the breath that fills my lungs. Sing through me, the song I want to sing for you."

The third track has Gray utilizing a deeper voice to convey his intentions. A beatbox-like intro is accomplished through the use of drums and percussion for a one-of-a-kind sound. This is unusual, given this song seems to be a musical affidavit chronicling how he thought he had fallen in love at first sight, but is now doubtful if this woman ever actually felt anything for him, with lyrics like, "The first time I heard you call my name, I saw the man that I could be my life was like a gift that you gave to me. But now I'm haunted by the memory of a promise I thought I heard from you and I'm not assured of all the things I thought that I once knew. But I don't believe you brought me this far to give up/Keep fighting for it, show me again what I was made for." It seems Gray is attempting to determine if all he has felt has been a pretense and if this woman has been stringing him along, yet he refuses to believe she would do such a treacherous thing.

Jason Gray's All The Lovely Losers has a mixture of reflective songs about relationship positives and pitfalls, but as the listener goes through the album, Gray's voice echoes each individual emotion achingly.
